2001 NJSIAA/Bob's Store District XVI Team Champions - North Bergen

North Bergen repeated as District XVI team champion, accumulating the same total of 230 points that earned the 2000 team title. St. Peter's Prep was runnerup again with Ridgefield finishing third as the Royals swapped places with Kearny.
Ron Palmieri of North Bergen three-peated as a District XVI champion, winning the 130-pound crown by posting a 17-2 technical fall over Luis Escobar of Fort Lee. Four grapplers repeated as champions. They were the North Bergen duo of Alex Brito (103) and Luis Rabelo (119) along with John Caprio (160) of St. Peter's Prep and John DeGravino (152) of Kearny. Ridgefield's Tom Herman, who won as a sophomore but lost in the 119-pound title round to Palimieri last year, picked up his second gold medal when he edged Frank Panella of St. Peter's Prep 14-12 for the 125-pound title.
Elmer Garcia of North Bergen was chosen the Outstanding Wrestler after posting a 7-5 decision over Bayonne's Rashwan Lott in the 112-pound championship bout.
There was a new addition to the roster of teams as the Secaucus program which finished ninth last year, was merged with Weehawken and the combined team moved up to sixth place in the team standings.
Bayonne garnered its first-ever District XVI gold medal in the final event of the competition when heavyweight Dave Cioffo posted a 7-3 decision over Cliffside Park's Fernando Caral.
